About The Woodlands High School Band
The Woodlands High School Band has achieved many past accomplishments in both marching and concert activities. TWHS Marching Band is a 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2023 UIL State Marching Contest Finalist. The band has been a Bands of America Regional Finalist for 28 consecutive years, a 17-time BOA Super Regional Finalist, and an eleven-time BOA Grand National Finalist. In addition, TWHS Band was named the 2013 Bands of America Super Regional Champions in San Antonio and the 2013 BOA Grand National Champions in Indianapolis.
TWHS Winter Guard is a former Texas State Color Guard Circuit Champion and Winter Guard International Open-Class Champion and competes in these events annually across the state of Texas. In addition, the guard was the 2013 WGI Southwestern Regional Champion. In 2019, TWHS Varsity Winter Guard was a World-Class Finalist at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH, a first for The Woodlands High School. In 2021, TWHS Varsity Winter Guard competed once again at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH, this time placing third - a first for The Woodlands High School and the first ever Color Guard in Texas to medal.
TWHS Percussion performed as a featured ensemble at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society in Indianapolis and performs extensive percussion ensemble concerts each spring. Its ensembles have been awarded the top honors in various percussion ensemble contests across the Houston area.
TWHS Concert Bands includes four competitive concert ensembles representing The Woodlands High School at the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading evaluations each year. All four concert bands consistently earn Superior ratings at these events. Past concert band performances include the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, the Field Studies Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2009, and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in 2003 and 2012. This coming spring of 2025, The Woodlands High School Band will host its 18th Annual Solo & Ensemble Festival which offers an opportunity for student musicians to showcase their musical talents through solo and ensemble performances. Many of its members consistently earn recognition in Region, Area and All State Bands year after year. The Woodlands High School Band is a proud recipient of the Sudler Flag of Honor and the Sudler Shield in 2009 and 2018.
These accomplishments and the success of The Woodlands High School Band would not be possible without the commitment of its members, its parent booster club, and the generous donations from our local businesses and individuals.

Competition Format
Lone Star Preview has adopted the contest format of Bands of America for today’s event. Listed below are some of the specifics concerning the format.
Eligibility: Eligibility is open to all high school bands. All participating members must be enrolled at the same high school as full-time students, or at the feeder school of the participating high school. All performers who contribute to the performance must be students.
Event Registration/Preliminary Performance Info: The event shall be limited to no more than 26 bands. Entries will be accepted via the online entry form beginning March 30, 2024 at 8:00 AM CT through August 31, 2024 (or until maximum number of entries has been received). Any entries received prior to March 30, 2024 at 8:00 AM CT will not be considered for placement until that date. The defending champion will have the option to perform last in the preliminary competition. Entry deadline is August 31, 2024 or once 26 bands have registered, whichever comes first. Preliminary competition will start no earlier than 9:00 A.M. and band performances will be scheduled at 15-minute intervals.
Classification: Enrollment for classification is based on Bands of America. Bands are classified by school enrollment, grades 10-12 only. Under our four-class system (same as Bands of America classification):
Adjudicators: Judges will be selected from the lists from Bands of America, Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. These organizations provide extensive numbers management training for their judges. The panel will be selected from all parts of the country in order to obtain the best possible adjudication team.
Scoring System: The Bands of America scoring system/sheets will be used for this event. It is the position of Bands of America that music is the more important aspect of the performance, with marching as the presentation and visual enhancement of the program. Similarly, more emphasis has been placed on the effectiveness to the audience and to general effect judges, than on fine-line perfection of the performance judges - which may be an aspect to work on for even better effectiveness. Consequently, the weight of the numbers in the Bands of America scoring system places 60% of the value on music and 40% on visual, and at the same time, 60% of the score is within the area of general effect and 40% within the performance area. The point allotment for the competition is as follows:
20 points* Music Performance (Individual), judged on the field
20 points* Music Performance (Ensemble), judged from the stands
20 points* Visual Performance (Individual), judged from the field
20 points* Visual Performance (Ensemble), judged from the stands
20 points General Effect Visual, judged from the highest point in the stands
40 points General Effect Music, judged from the highest point in the stands
Timing & Penalties Judge
*Averaged
If two or more bands have a tie in their final score, the higher placement will be awarded to the band with the higher raw score (subtotal before penalties). If, after using this criterion, a tie still exists, the highest General Effect total will be used to determine placement. This procedure will only be applied in class champion and finals competitions. When bands achieve the same (tied) score in prelims, and when such score causes a placement e for the last position advancing to the finals competition, each band with a tied score will advance.
Pre-Draw for Finals Performance Order: At time of check-in, Directors will draw a number from 1 to 26 (or the total number of bands performing). The Finals performance schedule will be derived by assigning the top 5 scoring bands from Prelims to the last 5 performance times in numerical order according to the pre-draw. The next 5 will be assigned the first 5 performance times in numerical order according to the pre-draw. Drawn numbers will be documented and displayed at the Director Check-In station and will be updated as bands check-in for the event.
Preliminary Awards Presentation: At the conclusion of the preliminary competition, all unit drum majors will gather for Class awards and announcement of finalists. Overall preliminary scores will not be announced, nor made public until the conclusion of the finals competition. Division ratings will be announced and awards will be given for each classification as follows:
Division Ratings:
I 75 and above
II 60 - 74
III 45 - 59
IV 44 and below
Awards:
1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class
Following the announcement of the Class placement awards, the top 10 scoring bands, regardless of class, will be announced in random order. The finals competition will be void of any classes. Preliminary Class champion performers will be awarded medals at the Finals awards presentation.
In the event that there is only one band entered in a class, only the 1st-place class placement trophy will be presented.
Finals Event Schedule: Immediately following the announcement of the finalist bands, a meeting for the director or representative of each finalist band will be held in a designated area. Finalist performance order will be determined by the pre-draw process as explained above. In the event that a "Class Champion" band does not score high enough to place in the finals competition, that band will have the option to perform in the finals event at either the beginning or conclusion of the finals competition.
Finals Awards Presentation: The event will feature a full-band retreat with all finalist bands and Class Champion exhibition bands. Awards will be presented to finalist bands for 1st through 10th, as well as Highest Achievements (same as prelims). At the conclusion of the Final awards presentation, members will be dismissed to congratulate each other. The champion unit will be offered the option to have the field for a victory performance, once all performers have left the field.
Critique: A judges’ critique session will be available immediately following the Finals Awards presentation for those bands that performed in exhibition or as a finalist during the evening. This will be on a first-come, first served, basis and is optional for the aforementioned bands.
